I think you're getting the right idea. You might want to adjust the skin tone and the colours so they are a bit more bright and light. Typically, vector pieces need higher contrast colours or pastel colours to look natural. As well, try making the black facial details a skin tone shade. As well, I would also suggest adding details to the hair so the facial region stands out. Keep up the good work!
And yes, the details are the most difficult parts because they can be so complex and hard to make them look right. However, the evolution of your pieces is quickly becoming better and better.
